Well prepared for floods

Number: 1

Is your residential area at risk of flooding? Or prone to flooding during heavy rain? Be informed and take precautions!

Keep an eye on alerts

Keep up to date!

Follow the current weather reports and flood warnings on the NINA app, radio or Internet.

Information on current flood levels can be found on the website for flood information. You can also get information about flood risk areas from your municipality. Many municipalities now also offer heavy rain hazard maps online.

In order to be well prepared, think about the following early on:

  • Caring for the sick or those in need. Can you evacuate these people from the danger zone in time? Where?
  • The evacuation of pets.
  • The opportunities to talk to neighbors or others when the phone and cell phone are down. Discuss distress and danger signs with neighbors.
  • The "role distribution" for emergencies. Who does what when a flood occurs?

A flood is imminent

If a flood has been announced that also affects you, you should act.

  • For protection, stock up on sandbags, clapboards, waterproof plywood, and silicone.
  • Make sure that hazardous substances or chemicals cannot be reached by the water.
  • Bring valuable furniture or equipment such as computers etc. to the upper, flood-protected rooms.
  • Secure the heating oil tank against the buoyancy of the water, for example by anchoring it to the wall or weighing it down with ballast.
  • Review your precautionary measures. Do you have everything you need in the house?
    • sufficient food and drinking water
    • a battery operated radio or a crank radio
    • a flashlight
    • a camping stove
    • a camping toilet
  • Have your briefcase and emergency luggage ready.
  • Also remember to bring insect repellent in case mosquitoes and other pests spread around the house after the flood waters have subsided.
  • Clear out the basement rooms that groundwater can penetrate or that can fill up.
