War in Ukraine
Two years of aid for Ukraine
For two years now, the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (Geman abbrev.: BBK) has been standing by its partners in Ukraine and providing support on many levels.
Here we provide an overview of what the BBK is doing in this situation.
Find out what assistance the BBK is offering, which other agencies are ensuring the safety of the population and how you can take precautions yourself. You can also find out how you can support refugees.
State aid for civil protection in Ukraine
Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine until the end of February 2024, the Joint Reporting and Situation Center (German abbrev.: GMLZ) has coordinated aid with a total volume of over 224 million euros.
The aid went directly to the neighboring states of Moldova, Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This includes important goods such as essential medical and hygiene products, vehicles and materials for accommodating refugees.
Together with other federal ministries, the BBK also examines large offers of donations from the private sector, makes the necessary arrangements and coordinates transportation on request.
Zitat
We continue to stand firmly by the side of our Ukrainian partners and the Ukrainian civilian population. The BBK organizes Germany's nationwide non-military aid for Ukraine. In addition to coordinating and transporting relief supplies to Ukraine, my office also provides support as part of the so-called cloverleaf mechanism. Injured people from Ukraine are transferred to Germany for medical treatment.

Help for Ukrainian refugees
The BBK not only operates internationally, but also provides important support within Germany.
In order to cope with the large influx of refugees, those affected were accommodated at the former airport in Berlin-Tegel. The on-site capacities were expanded in spring 2022 through the use of material from the “Labor Care 5,000” pilot project together with the DRK.
Zitat
I would like to thank all the helpers and all colleagues in the BBK who work every day to help the people in Ukraine. Since 2022, the BBK has been using all necessary resources in 24/7 operation to quickly and effectively deliver the necessary professional help to the affected areas.
Crisis management
The BBK and the federal and state ministries are continually monitoring the situation in a situation report to see how the war in Ukraine is affecting civil protection and the population in Germany.
Relevant situation information from the federal states and federal ministries is brought together.
The BBK is the central interface for various federal ministries, the states and international partners.
It supports Ukraine and its European neighbors affected by Russia's war of aggression. In addition, the BBK contributes to good crisis management in Germany with its specialist knowledge.
Dam destruction 2023
On June 6, 2023, the Kakhovka dam northeast of Kherson was destroyed.
The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK for short) coordinated aid for the affected areas.
After the destruction of the dam, the GMLZ was able to coordinate aid worth around 10 million euros. This included, among other things, sending special search teams and technical equipment such as high-performance pumps, lifeboats, generator sets and clearing equipment.
